About Xenos and Proud

This is a small blog about my Warhammer 40,000 hobby. I will try to concentrate on the tactics behind the general game and my Xenos armies but there will be the odd post about random stuff.

About Me

Xenos and Proud is an 18 year old from Scotland who has been playing 40K for the last 4 years. He loves the 'under-dog' xenos armies, namely his Tyranid Gorgon splinter fleet, his Saim-Hann windrider host, his Tau Vleastean Hunter-cadre and the newest addition, the Shadowfax Corsairs. Although his tactics are mostly 'borrowed', his painting skills still 'developing' and his luck becoming evermore 'ridiculous' he continues to play, paint and roll in the hope that one day things will get better.

Fluff Friday: Vleast Planetary Analysis

Hey everyone. I have let this slip recently but not any more. I shall strive to complete a 'Fluff Friday' every week and keep myself motivated.

So here's the first in a rethought of the series where I will also include my own fluff inventions, mainly focusing on the system and war I am creating for my friends' and I's armies to play. Here is an introduction to the planet, an Imperial Analysis.

Vleast IV Planetary Survey
Date: 978.M41

Planetary/System Analysis:
Taros System: 6 planets (I – VI), 2 habitable (Vleast IV, Vleast III)
Size: Equatorial Distance: 14,000 miles
Gravity: 1.13G
Satellites: 1 Large Moon, Vleast IV.I (Local Designation – Peticrus)
Rotation Speed: 11,000 mph (1 rotation every 4 Terran hours)
Climate Classification: Extreme – Hyper Tropical
Star Orbit: 2.6 Terran years
Star Class: F (Giant Star)
Land/Ocean Ratio: 32.6% Land, 67.4% Ocean and River
Closest Astartes Homeplanet: Salamanders, Nocturne
Closest Xenos Species: Tau Empire, Fal’shia

Population Analysis:
Imperial Colonisation Status: Abandoned
Colonisation Date: 910.M41 – 972.M41
Planetary Government: Devolved, Tribal
Human Population: 4,000,000 approx.
Xenos Population: Native – *Indiscernible*, Alien – Suspected Tau Colonists

Climatic Analysis:
Atmospheric Composition: Nitrogen 75%, Oxygen 24%, Argon >1%, Carbon Dioxide >1%
Climate: The climate fluctuates wildly due to a combination of the intense planetary rotation, the strong star gravity and the large, fast-orbiting moon. However, the main climate is hyper tropical and the average temperature is 30.5C. The abundance of water helps regulate the weather but it does not compensate for the gigantic planetary disturbances.
***Latest records show 14 hurricanes and 9 extreme flash floods between 970.M41 and 971.M41***

Climatic Regions: Vleast was not colonised long enough for colonies to establish more than one populated and explored planetary region. However the planet has been divided into rough Coastal, Inner Continental, Ocean and Polar Regions.

-          Coastal Regions are the affected most by the extreme weather making them almost uninhabitable. Regular floods easily destroy buildings and hurricanes, along with constant high winds, mean construction is impossible.
-          The Inner Continents are the only habited regions as they are protected from the weather by the large areas of land separating them from the coast. They also have the least amount of wildlife and flora.
-          Ocean Regions cover almost 70% of the planet and contain the most native life. As much of the life is hostile these areas have been left unexplored. The ocean surface is also extremely violent due to the extreme planetary forces, making even exceptionally durable ocean surveillance equipment unusable.
-          Polar Regions are also unexplored as they are mostly ocean. However there are relatively small areas of ice that could provide another, more stable, area for colonisation.

Native Life Analysis:
Native Flora: Most of the planet is covered in vegetation (this is likely to have caused the high concentration of Oxygen in the atmosphere) all of which is suspected to have originated from underwater as this would provide a more stable environment than the disaster stricken land. The underwater plants gradually evolved to become semi-aquatic and now thrive on the Coastal Regions where they receive direct sunlight and regular amounts of water when the region floods. The flora is a large factor in survival on Vleast IV as much of it is carnivorous and very dense making most of the land inhabitable. Some locations have been successfully claimed from these fierce plants but most were abandoned some years before the planet-wide evacuation.

Native Animals: There are not many native animals on Vleast IV. An estimated 68% of all the native animals are aquatic herbivores and a further 18% are aquatic carnivores. Almost all of the land animals are herbivores and feed on the abundant vegetation. All appear to have six limbs but are otherwise just Class 2 Species.

Vermnicous Knids: There have however been reports of an unusual species of creature unique to Vleast IV. The following is the first recorded report of these strange creatures dating 921.M41.

*** Log Entry Number 210
Date: 536921.M41.

A new species has been discovered. It is suspected to have been responsible for; the invasion of 54, now irreparable, outposts; 540 km^2 of bulldozed farmland; the disappearance of 83 expedition groups and finally the slaughtering of 2065 Imperial livestock.

The discovery was made by the remnants of a large expedition group who had been attacked by these odd..... animals. The survivors’ descriptions seem to detail a living, breathing plant organism which ‘surround them, like the very forest had closed upon them’. It appears that there is a native being neither plant nor animal but an abomination between the two. It must disguise itself amongst the thousands of plants and then when prey draws close attack with its ‘poisonous tentacles’.

The survivors describe the creatures as being mobile upon tentacle-like legs but this may be a hallucination caused by their inevitable madness.

Species Designation: Vermnicious Knids

Action taken upon new species: EXTERMINATION
Action taken upon survivors: THERE WERE NO SURVIVORS

Log closed***

P.S. My friend Ko'vash has control over the second habitable planet in this system, Vleast III. Hopefully he should be making some fluff too.

  1. I suppose I should start writing my part of the story. Can't promise as much science info but I'll do my best. Liking the Vermnicous Knids a lot.
