About Xenos and Proud

This is a small blog about my Warhammer 40,000 hobby. I will try to concentrate on the tactics behind the general game and my Xenos armies but there will be the odd post about random stuff.

About Me

Xenos and Proud is an 18 year old from Scotland who has been playing 40K for the last 4 years. He loves the 'under-dog' xenos armies, namely his Tyranid Gorgon splinter fleet, his Saim-Hann windrider host, his Tau Vleastean Hunter-cadre and the newest addition, the Shadowfax Corsairs. Although his tactics are mostly 'borrowed', his painting skills still 'developing' and his luck becoming evermore 'ridiculous' he continues to play, paint and roll in the hope that one day things will get better.

Tau Army List Trouble

I've kind of hit a wall in my Tau army list building. I was adamant for the last few months to have a really fluffy army and try not to copy other Tau players and just make a Mech Tau army. But after much experimenting I have decided that my efforts were all in vain; it is impossible to make a non-mech competitive Tau list.

So with that decided I am now back to where I started with my Tau about 3 months ago, the Missile Mania list. This involves lots of crisis suits all with Twin-Linked Missile Pods. About 12 suits will do. I think that 24, S7, AP4, 36" range, Twin-Linked shots will take care of most other mech armies and MCs.

But what else to include and how do I still keep this army adherent to my fluff? Well I'm still working on the fluff but tell me what you think of the army list so far.

I tried to include as many suits as I could (12 in this list) but I also need some heavy tank busting stuff and things to kill heavy infantry, like my friends terminators. This is why I have the Hammerheads and the Plasma command team who will more often than not be guided by markerlights.

I was debating with my friends as whether to take Targeting Arrays on the Crisis suits but I decided against it eventually as they are already twin-linked and if needed can be help via markerlights. Also the flamers will prove invaluable against hordes.

Any thoughts?

  1. I'm not sure what your fluff is, but it seems the above list is missing ways for you to be proactive on the table, other than just dishing out lots of fire power. What I mean is, I take piranha squadrons so I can move them out, block enemy transports, drop drones in the way of infantry assaulters, generally cause havoc amongst the enemy force. This all goes on while I'm dealing loads of damage from broadsides and missile pods. It's a way of being proactive and influencing the tabletop. Your list above is missing this element. If you're not interested in piranhas, I can't think of any other units that can do this...maybe you could do so with 3 units of 4 gun drones each...they might be able to move out, block foot-troops and be a nuisance because of their small size and little value....

You could go all foot-troopers...drop the vehicles altogether and run a little horde of shooty units...kroot and firewarriors are both pretty cheap....

  2. I thought of going all troops and having lots of Fire Warriors, Crisis Suits and Broadsides with drones as harassers but I thought that it just wouldn't do enough damage and that the Fire Warriors were basically useless and would Die outside of transports.

Also if I take vehicles out of the equation then all those lascannons and missile launchers begin killing crisis suits and broadsides. I suppose it could work if I bounce around cover and make those things my highest priority.

I seem to have lost my army list for the foot army, so here's a short list of the units I remember.

    HQ
    Shas'el, TL MP, Drones
2 Bodyguard, TL MP, Pos relay, Stim

    Elite
3 Suits, TL MP, Drones, Leader, Bonded

    3 Suits, TL Cannons/flamers, Shas'vre, Failsafe

    Troops
6 Fire Warriors, 'Ui, drones, bonded
6 Fire Warriors, 'Ui, drones, bonded

    Fast Attack
    5 Drones
    5 Drones
    5 Drones

    Heavy
    2 Broadsides, A.S.S, 'vre, Lock

The suits have crazy weaponry which was my attempt at trying to make the army very fluffy and all the suits unique. The army is more unique but not focused enough I think.

P.S. I really hate kroot, the fluff, the rules and the models. I already have a nid army so I also don't want a horde of FWs.
